women in power…

Thursday, November 24th, 2005

A couple of days ago I was chatting with a good friend of mine after reading the news about Angela Merkel becoming Germany’s first female chancellor. Then today I read about Ellen Johnson -Sirleaf becoming the female elected president in Liberia, also the first female elected president in Africa. Before thinking about any comments about how Cleopatra and Hatshebsut(whatever the spelling is) were pharonic leaders in ancient Egypt, they weren’t elected. As with other kingdoms the people were rather forced to have them as leaders.

I found this news rather interesting, personally I wouldn’t have any problem of having a female as president as long as she has the qualities of the leader, is ethical , not corrupt and listens to her people.

Mabrouk to Angela and Ellen.

Cheers!

crime in Cairo…

Tuesday, November 15th, 2005

Within the last couple of years the issue of crime was brought up more often than before (is this sentence in proper in English?).
Within this last year a couple of my relatives had things stolen from their houses. Another relative was harrassed in the streets of Cairo, someone even grabbed her arm trying to pull her into a car. But however a gentelman who was passing in the street beat the attacker. Is it time I gave all the girls I know pepperspray to keep with them in case of emergencies?

Franklyk, I don’t think people in Cairo are used to things like this. We’ve always talked about how the the crime in Egypt is much lower than in Europe and the US.

Crime is increasing, why? Well…I’d guess the list would start by things like how morals are getting worse generation by generation, how the rate of unemployment is getting higher and higher….the list goes on…

So where’re this country going?

trip to alexandria…

Saturday, November 12th, 2005

currently I am on my way back from alexandria, first time to write a post from my pocket pc, gprs is a blessing. of course its not very convenient using an extremely small keyboard, so this post is probably going to be quite short.

Now for a couple of thoughts, first of all the taxis in alexandria are cheaper than the ones in cairo. I also found the drivers to be more friendly than their Cairine counterparts. But I thinkthis is just a part of how people in smaller towns are usually more friendly and hospitable than ones who live in capitals.

Overall it was a pretty nice 3 day trip, work assignment
went very smoothly, saw several relatives, had a very nice seafood lunch and very nice icecream. The weather was awesome, not too hot and not too cold.

My train should arrive in Cairo in less than 15 mins or so insha2Allah.

cheers!

drunk driving…

Saturday, November 5th, 2005

When you attach this:
Front half
to this:
Back half
you get a car that had a family in it.

Today morning at around 5 am in Salah Salem St, Cairo and accident took place. It involved a car which had a whole family in it (the one that was LITERALLY split in half) and another that had a few young men. I think its a miracle that no one died (at least not immediately). Around 4 ambulances came and took all the injured. I think the accident was caused by the car that had a few young men, it was pretty clear that some of them (if not all) were drunk. When I was beside their car, the smell of beer was very clear. I saw a couple of beer cans.
